Chiari Malformation

This condition occurs where the bottom of the cerebellum (cerebellar tonsils) herniate out of the skull into the spinal canal. There are many reasons why this part of the brain is pushed, pulled or squeezed out of the skull.

This puts pressure on the cerebellum, brainstem and spinal canal. It can also lead to other conditions like Syringomyelia and Intracranial Hypertension.

It causes problems with and occipital headache, balance issues, sleep problems, swallowing issues and much more.

Treatment, when conservative measures don't work, requires surgery to remove bone from the skull/neck and may required splitting the lining of the brain and/or manipulating the cerebellar tonsils by cauterising them.
